A Shameless Cry for Attention

Posted by

So, two month and four episodes in, The Short Story Geeks Podcast has just released its longest episode, and it’s a whopper. I know people are out there — my call for an emergency backup geek got multiple responses, and Greg’s Smashwords coupons are being redeemed. And I suppose the fact that people keep listening and don’t rip us to shreds should be taken as a sign that people like what they’re hearing. ;)

Still, I’d really like to know what people think of it. Greg, Buck and I originally started with the idea that we’d do six episodes over three months and based on that decide if we wanted to continue, change format, or what. As we’re 2/3 of the way there, and it’s something that Buck and I at least are probably going to be talking about quite a bit at AnthroCon.

So please, if you’ve listened to the show, lemme know what you think! I don’t just want “Great show!” here, although that’s certainly welcome if that’s what you think. :) I’d like to know what you think works, what doesn’t work, ways we could improve … anything you’ve got to say about it. You can leave comments here, you can shoot me an e-mail at thegneech@gmail.com, whatever works for ya.

Thanks! :)

Gotta love positive reviews! :) Thanks for the kind words, fellas. Not sure what you were getting at re: “body movements” near the end, I’ll give it a re-listen and see if I can figure it out.

The Sound of One Lip Smacking

The podcasting partners and I recorded a practice show over the weekend; it came out a lot better than I expected, actually, although there was definitely room for improvement.

Now, the three of us are pretty comfortable public speakers, and at least two of us have what could charitably be referred to as “disk jockey” experience, but even with that it’s sometimes amazing just how much extraneous noise creeps into speech. “Uuuhhhss…” and “ummmss…” and the pernicious “sort of” pops up a lot, especially in the case of yours truly. I am blessed to be free of inserting “like” every third word or using the Cheerleader’s Question Mark (“You know that’s like when you end every sentence on a rising note? Like you’re trying to get everybody to agree with you? And it makes you sound like really vague and annoying or whatever?”), but I did occasionally find myself actually making “tic-tic” noises to fill audio space when trying to come up with the second half of a sentence.

Fortunately, a lot of the more egregious stuff can be fixed in post-production, but with that you have to have a light touch so it still sounds natural. For our ten-minute test show, I probably cut out at least 45 seconds of “…” and I probably could have been more aggressive, but when it comes to the actual showtime, I’m also going to try to keep us working from an outline (which will then form the basis of show notes) and try to schedule our recording times for some point when we’re all a little more awake for it. I don’t mind if we sound like NPR, but I don’t want us to sound like “NPR on sedatives.” ;)

There are a few technical things I need to keep in mind for the actual show as well … up the gain on the voices, reduce the gain on the music, etc. But on the whole, I was quite pleased! Hopefully we’ll have a website and other good stuff in the next week or two. I’m jazzed about it!

In Which I Tease, With Teasey Teasers

Posted by

This week has been a productive one: I have secured a pair of excellent Podcasting Partners and we’ve had our first brainstorming session. Who are they, you ask? Well I ain’t gonna tell you! This post is a teaser, after all. They may or may not choose to talk about it in their own bloggy spheres, in which case it’ll be up to your amazing detective skills to find the clues. I will say that I’m very pleased that both of my first choices were not only available but eager to sign up. :)

The podcast, in case you’re curious, will be a literary one concentrating on short fiction — news, reviews, and how-to’s. Digital formats have really started a short fiction renaissance, and as I’ve always loved the form, a podcast about it is just a natural fit. :) I’m still casting around for things like a title, but I’m sure that stuff will firm up in the next few weeks. The actual podcast will probably launch after I get back from Confuzzled, but I’m sure there will be more details to share between now and then. We’re still in the planning stages now, so any input is welcome and desired!

The other big production news for this week is that Attack of the War-Cats, the second NeverNever collection, is off to the printer! I’m expecting to receive a proof back tomorrow, and assuming it’s all good, the actual books should show up sometime in mid-April. Look for preorders to become available soon!

That’s it for now. Catcha later!
